Loganair update on strike action at HIAL airports – 19 & 22 December 2022
Following the announcement of strike action by Unite – The Union at Highlands and Islands Airports (HIAL) on 19 and 22 December, we have now received confirmation from HIAL of the impact expected on the opening hours of its airports.
All Loganair flights to and from Campbeltown, Islay and Tiree; from Dundee to London City; and from Inverness to Birmingham, Belfast City, Dublin and Manchester will be unaffected and will take place as scheduled. We have re-opened our booking system for flights on these dates accordingly, and if you already hold a booking on one of these routes, there is no need to re-confirm your travel plans or take any action.
There will be no service to and from Barra, Benbecula, Kirkwall (external flights) and Sumburgh on 19 and 22 December.
We will be operating a morning schedule only of Orkney inter-isles air services (up to 1300 hrs) based on limited availability of facilities and manpower at Kirkwall for the small aircraft flying these routes. There will also be changes to morning flights to and from Stornoway on both 19 and 22 December, although we plan to operate a near-normal schedule of afternoon flights to and from Stornoway on these days.

If your flight is amongst those cancelled due to this industrial action by HIAL staff, you will receive an e-mail from Loganair within the next 24 hours setting out the options available to you. This will go to the e-mail address provided to us at the time your booking was made – please do check spam and junk folders. These options are:
- re-book without charge on an alternative flight of your choosing, and you can also choose an alternative route if seats are not available on your original route – e.g. if Glasgow-Sumburgh flights are full, you can rebook from Edinburgh to Sumburgh;
- request a refund for your booking if you decide not to travel.
As we expect call volumes into our Customer Help Centre to be extremely high, we’d ask customers wherever possible to use the on-line rebooking or refund request options provided in your e-mail. If your flight is not listed below and you receive no e-mail from us, your flight is unaffected and there is no need to contact us or take any action.
At this time, we have seat availability on most routes for customers on 19 and 22 December whose journeys are disrupted by the industrial action to be able to re-plan their travel either a day earlier or a day later. We are also adding a number of extra flights to provide extra capacity for customers on routes to and from Aberdeen to re-plan their journeys:
- An extra evening Kirkwall-Aberdeen service on Sunday 18 and Wednesday 21 December
- An extra Aberdeen-Kirkwall morning service on Tuesday 20 and Friday 23 December
- An extra Sumburgh-Aberdeen and Aberdeen-Sumburgh flight on Friday 23 December
Details of these services can also be found in the flight listings below, and seats on these flights will be available via the Manage my Booking facility and Loganair website as normal.
Due to capacity constraints and strike action falling around the shortest day of the year, we regret that we will be unable to provide additional flights on non-strike days between Glasgow and Barra due to the tide and daylight limitations.
Travel disruption is unwelcome at any time of year, but most particularly in the run-up to Christmas when each and every journey has heightened importance to our customers’ individual plans. It is hugely disappointing that Unite – The Union has called strike action which will impact Loganair’s customers, and basic community services including mail deliveries, at this critical time.
We’re sorry that these cancellations and changes have become necessary and apologise to Loganair customers for this unwelcome news. At the same time, we must ask your understanding that this situation is completely beyond our control and influence. We’ll do everything we practicably can to assist customers in re-planning their journeys to take account of this situation.
