Travel to Tiree
Sunshine, silver sands, sensational surf and solitude
Think sunshine, sandy beaches and windsurfing: that’s Tiree. Also known as The Land Below the Waves because of its flatness and The Hawaii of the North because it’s so good for windsurfing, this low-lying island measures just ten miles by five, but it packs many attractions.
For families who want to get away from it all, there are glorious beaches, turquoise waters, wild flower meadows and any number of tranquil coves. Tiree often outperforms everywhere else in Britain for daily hours of sunshine, but in months when days are shorter and nights longer, streetlight-free Tiree is perfect for dark-sky watching.
Nature lovers will adore the birdlife...
... such as rare corncrakes, countless sea birds and wintering geese, and keep your eyes peeled for hares, otters, porpoise, dolphins and minke whales.
Echoes of Viking days still resound across Tiree, in remains and place names. Among the crofting townships you’ll often spot restored thatched cottages, and you can go back farther in time, at iron age forts and brochs. You can find bikes to hire and horses to ride, craft shops to browse in and fascinating centres to introduce you to the island and its past. At day’s end, perhaps sip the island’s own Tyree Gin (that’s the old spelling, not a typo).
You’re out on Scotland’s Atlantic seaboard, so for windsurfers there are world-class waves to catch. Whichever way the wind blows there’s always somewhere to surf (inland Loch Bhaspol is ideal for beginners). In October the island hosts Wave Classic, the longest running pro windsurfing event in the world*, attracting top athletes to this little bit of heaven, just one hour’s flight from Glasgow.
An Iodhlann
An Iodhlann is an excellent small museum with so much information on the history of Tiree. A visit early in your trip is recommended, as what you learn with add to the enjoyment of your stay on this beautiful island.
Surfs Up
Tiree is perfectly placed to catch the swell from the North Atlantic, which gives year-round waves. With beaches facing every direction you're certain to find the perfect waves to catch on the island. All these beaches create conditions to suit all levels of surfer, from beginners who have never picked up a board to pros.
