... is playwright Henrik Ibsen, famous for his classic Hedda Gabler, but the creativity extends to sculpture, with over 200 works in Frogner Park. There’s also a dazzling contemporary art scene, awesome architecture and neighbourhoods made famous by writers such as Norwegian-noir author Jo Nesbø.

You will never be short of museums. An enthralling choice includes museums individually devoted to skiing, Viking ships, Amundsen’s legendary polar ship Fram, Natural History … hey, why not stop for a bite, in one of this cosmopolitan city’s many superb cafes, bars and restaurants, which include the world’s most northerly 3-Star Michelin establishment? Aker Brygge Wharf is always a good place for a breather, with restaurants and shops lining the inner harbour.

Tour the Akershus Fortress or thrill to the rides and water park in Tusen Fryd Amusement Park. After dark (or, in summer, after not-so-dark) enjoy the nightlife: Oslo knows how to party.

The Viking Ship Museum

The Viking Ship Museum on the Bygdøy peninsula has the world's best-preserved Viking ships and finds from Viking tombs around the Oslo Fjord. On show are discoveries from the Gokstad, Oseberg and Tune ships, plus small boats, sledges, a beautiful cart, tools, textiles and household utensils. Ragnar Lodbrok would be proud!

The Øya Festival

In August every year the Øya Festival draws around 60,000 music lovers to Oslo's east side, where they can enjoy four days of everything from international stars to up-and-coming artists.
The Club Night on Tuesday, with concerts at many small clubs, serves as a warm-up for the four days in the Tøyen Park festival area. Wednesday to Saturday you can hear concerts from three stages in the park.
