Travel to Esbjerg

Gateway to Jutland, Legoland, relaxing land

Denmark is a famously chilled-out country (they invented hygge, after all, the uniquely Danish feeling of cosy contentment), so let’s start with a coffee in Esbjerg’s spacious Main Square, or a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants and cafes, while you consider your options.

You could go for retail therapy in the longest shopping street in Denmark or visit the nearby centre for performing arts. Take in a museum or gallery or two, touch on wildlife, printing, offshore activities - the Lightship Museum has the Horns Rev, the world’s oldest and best-preserved lightship. The many surviving military bunkers along the coast are astonishing reminders of WW2.

At the Esbjerg harbour entrance ...

... you can’t miss the statues of four nine-metre-tall seated figures: the imposing sculpture, Man Meets the Sea. That sea is the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, of precious salt marsh and wetlands. The visitor centre – a remarkable building in itself - reveals all. Esbjerg can be your threshold to the Jutland peninsula and its windmills and white sand beaches, and to the family delight that is Legoland, in Billund. Flying to Esbjerg is easy – child’s play, in fact.

Ribe Viking Museum

A must see for all fans of ancient Nordic times and Viking history. Ribe has long boasted strong Viking links, and the centre was established in 1992 to let visitors experience a true taste of life in the Viking Age. Here, you'll find authentic reconstructions of Viking settlements complete with marketplaces, farmhouses, and homes.

Esbjerg Festival Week

Every year in August Esbjerg Festival Week is celebrated, an explosion of far more than 200 cultural activities for guests of all ages. The activities are centred in the square and then spread to streets, parks, squares, to churches and big and small music venues.
