Travel to City of Derry

History, fantasy, culture on the North Coast

As Northern Ireland’s second largest city, and twice awarded the title of the United Kingdom's City of Culture, Derry~Londonderry has a lot to offer, in addition to its location at the heart of the Causeway Coastal Route and Wild Atlantic Way. The famous 400-year-old City Walls, which provide a mile walk in themselves, make it one of the finest walled cities in Europe and the only one in Ireland, but that’s just one of the distinctive attractions. When visiting the University City you can explore museums, galleries and theatres, along with St Columb’s Cathedral and its fine stained glass, regimental flags and artefacts from the Siege of 1688. It’s also home to the well-known television series, Derry Girls and the Derry Girls mural among many other cultural murals within the city.

Where the Wild Atlantic Way meets the Causeway Coastal Route...

The airport and city are the ideal gateway to the three Game of Thrones locations: Downhill Beach aka Dragonstone; Portstewart Strand plays the coast of Dorne; and Binevenagh-Limavady becomes Dothraki Grasslands in many a mind’s eye. The late poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney’s Homeplace Arts Centre in Bellaghy, midway between Derry and Belfast City, provides further literary inspiration.

A walk around the walls...

... in Derry-Londonderry reveals a splendid city crammed full of history, heritage, interest and a vibrant cultural scene. This is the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland and one of the finest examples of Walled Cities in Europe. The City Walls were built during the period 1613-1618 by the honourable, the Irish Society as defences for early seventeenth century settlers from England and Scotland and it really is a feature to see.

Giant’s Causeway

City of Derry Airport is the closest gateway to Northern Ireland’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giant’s Causeway. Some call this remarkable stone formation the Eighth Wonder of the World – it is a unique display of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns as a result of an ancient volcanic action 60 million years ago. City of Derry Airport is just a 50 minutes drive from this National Trust experience located along the North Antrim Coast.
