Travel from Guernsey
Continental vibe close to home
It feels like France, even the Med, with cliffs toppling into the sea and sandy beaches, but Guernsey is part of the British Isles alright – the afternoon teas give the game away.
Pretty St Peter’s Port with its lanes and steep cobbled streets, pleasant harbour and eye-catching skyline spires is the island’s main town and has capital attractions to match. Here are shops, restaurants and cafes, along with a bustling central market and historic buildings such as Old Government House overlooking the town. Keep an eye out for circles carved into old doorways – they ward off witches, it’s said.
The 800-year-old harbour...
... fort of Castle Cornet is always worth a visit, as is Hauteville House, the lavishly appointed former home of French literary giant Victor Hugo. If museums are your thing, catch the Underground Military Museum at La Vallette and step back to the days of the German Occupation.
Explore beyond town to the Bluebell Woods – readily walked from St Peter’s Port. Visit the remarkable Little Chapel in Les Vauxbelets, created with mosaics of broken china. Take a ferry to nearby Herm for its beaches, bays and gardens or pop over to traffic-free Sark, and cycle around or lord it in horse and carriage.
There’s no lack of outdoor pursuits in Guernsey: go surfing, golfing, biking, hiking … or just laze on a beach or soak up a Summer Sunday concert in Candie Gardens. Beautiful Cobo Bay beach resort is ideal for families. Fly to Guernsey and another world.
Hauteville House
Hauteville House is a house in St Peter Port where Les Misérables author Victor Hugo lived during his exile from France. In 1927 Hugo's descendants Jeanne, Jean, Marguerite and François donated the house to the City of Paris.[1] It currently houses an honorary consul to the French embassy in London and a Victor Hugo museum. The house and garden are both open to the public.
Guernsey Floral Festival
Guernsey produces the largest number of clematis variety in the world and has a fantastic range of flora, including orchid fields and bluebell woods. A variety of festivals is held each year to celebrate the local plant life, but the best of the lot is the annual Guernsey Floral Festival in June, when the island is in full bloom and there is a month of talks, garden visits and guided walks.
