Travel to Newquay
Gateway to Poldark country
On Cornwall’s spectacular northern shores, where the Atlantic breakers roar onto glorious beaches, discover fabulous countryside, immense tranquillity and a wealth of things to see and do.
Newquay, with no less than 12 sandy beaches, has earned the title of surfing capital of England, but you don’t have to catch waves to coast through a pleasant day by the seaside. Bustling Newquay Harbour is a must-see, and you can hook up with fishing trips and excursions. The bright, wide-open spaces of the beaches are ideal for all the family, plus Blue Reef Aquarium on the town seafront boasts sharks and rays. Another creature feature is Newquay Zoo and its lions, sloths, penguins and tropical creepy crawlies. Stroll in Trenance Gardens and have fun in Trenance Leisure Park.
Not far out of town...
... but further back in time visit 16th century Trerice Tudor Manor House and its formal gardens. Spread your wings just ten miles from Newquay, at Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre, and get up close to jet fighters. You’re in Poldark country, so delve into the old tin mining landscapes and hands-on history at Tolgus Mill near Redruth. High up on atmospheric Bodmin Moor, at centuries-old, iconic Jamaica Inn, be captivated by the Smugglers Museum.
Your inner artist will appreciate lovely St Ives, where so many great painters have found inspiration. Land’s End, western most tip of England, is just a few miles further. Don’t forget to have a Cornish ice cream or two.
Jamaica Inn
Welcome to Jamaica Inn, high up on wild and beautiful Bodmin Moor and made world-famous by Daphne du Maurier's tale of smugglers, rogues and wreckers. This historic coaching house has welcomed weary travellers for nearly 300 years. Full of legend, mystery, romance and even, according to folklore, the odd friendly spirit, the Inn continues to welcome guests with its fascinating Smugglers’ Museum where tales of wreckers, murderers and villains are brought wonderfully to life!
Boardmasters
Established in 1981, Boardmasters is a five-day event situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall - the surfing mecca of the UK, Fistral Beach where International Surf Competitions take place and arguably the most stunning location in the country to watch live music, Watergate Bay. Last year saw Boardmasters welcome over 150,000 festivalgoers across its two sites.
